Sustainability
We bear responsibility for people, the environment and society
About us
Sustainability is the starting point for all backup power solutions and an integral part of our operations. Sustainability is reflected in the professional skills of our employees, the selection of equipment, the results of our installation services, and shared practices. In addition, sustainability also means that we bear our responsibility. We keep it running.
Social sustainability is a built-in part of everything we do. Each day, we support our customers’ risk management and operational continuity. During 2022, we certified the ISO 9001 quality system, which we also require from all our equipment suppliers. We also expect our partners to share our values and have the same continuity. This ensures that the plant’s support, expertise and spare parts are available to our customers, now and in the future.
As part of our social sustainability, we take good care of the mental and physical wellbeing of our personnel. The health of every employee is our number one priority, and we provide our employees with extensive insurance. We receive high scores in personnel surveys because people enjoy working here. We are given the highest praise for trust: our working environment is free, and everyone has the opportunity to make a difference.
It is part of our social sustainability that we understand the importance of the backup power industry for the security of supply and electricity in Finland. We do everything we can to ensure that the functional capacity of our customers and society at large is maintained in exceptional and irregular situations. Society’s dependence on electricity is increasing all the time, which is why we are also preparing for new types of threats, including global cyberattacks. We do not simply want to be part of the change, we want to lead the way.
Climate sustainability requires that we continuously develop our operations. We also need to find lower-emission alternatives for diesel generators. The diesel generator fuel has a major impact on the carbon footprint of a backup power unit. We have switched to Neste’s renewable HVO diesel in all our rental units, maintenance and transport equipment.
Our customers can also select renewable diesel as the fuel used in their backup power units. HVO diesel reduces the greenhouse gas emissions of diesel generators by roughly 90%. We also install emission-rated Stage 5 and TIER 4F diesel generators, as well as gas generators that also run on biogas.
When other alternatives sustainable for the climate are available, we also place them available on Finnish markets. All of our equipment suppliers are pioneers in their field, investing in the development of battery and hydrogen technologies.
Transport and logistics are the largest emission sources globally, which is why we seek to optimise the import of backup power units so that the number of deliveries is minimised. We also pay attention to people’s low-emission mobility and develop various remote monitoring services. Commissioning and maintenance trips for backup power units are scheduled so that mechanics can move efficiently one week at a time without unnecessary back and forth driving.
In terms of environmental sustainability, our largest challenge is that diesel generators need oil and coolants. We pay significant attention to the sustainable use, consumption and handling of both substances. We use the most environmentally friendly coolants in the industry and have selected the oil type according to its long service life. In large equipment, oil is no longer changed annually, but only when necessary based on oil analyses. This reduces oil consumption.
We have built special protective structures outside our Tuusula facility to prevent any oil spills into nature. A protective film and oil separator wells have been installed under outdoor structures at liquid handling sites. An alarm system ensures that any spills are detected early. We collect spent oil from our customers appropriately and dispose of it through Lassila & Tikanoja.
Responsibility for sustainable development means the sustainable and resource-smart use of natural raw materials. The rental of backup power units ensures that our customers do not need to purchase their own equipment for temporary or occasional uses. This way, we save the raw materials and energy required in the manufacture of equipment, as well as maintenance resources for unnecessary units.
In principle, backup power generators have a long service life. With preventive maintenance and the modernisation of control systems, the lifecycle can be extended further. We always seek to use original spare parts and equipment manufacturers’ instructions in equipment maintenance. With condition surveys, units can be maintained and replaced at the correct time, never unnecessarily.
