New hospital in Kainuu
Kainuu Central Hospital does not go dark even during power outages
The new Kainuu Central Hospital consists of seven storeys and tens of thousands of square metres. Through technological development, focus was on the electrotechnical aspect from the very beginning, as every room houses several systems that require electrical technology to work. Caverion Finland was responsible for the installation of building systems in the hospital. Cooperation with kW-set ensured that the hospital’s operations are secured even during any power outages using uninterruptible backup power.
Backup power is one of the critical elements in a hospital environment, as hospital operations consist of several functions and procedures during which power must remain on. Backup power generators also ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity in the hospital in all exceptional situations. In addition to backup power generators, Kainuu Central Hospital decided to acquire a flywheel so that, in the event of a power outage, the supply of electricity cannot be interrupted even temporarily.
“If there is a power outage, the flywheel keeps electricity switched on until the backup power generator starts up and takes over the electrical load,” says Jani Vänninen, Service Manager at Caverion.
The multi-stage project involved close cooperation
During the multi-stage project, Caverion was constantly engaged in close cooperation with kW-set. Caverion was responsible for the supply of electricity between backup power containers and the main distribution board, as well as the installation of cables. Before the final delivery of containers, kW-set’s personnel visited the site to inspect the locations and agree on the placement of the containers.
“When the containers arrived, they were lowered into place together by joining our forces. After that, kW-set’s mechanics arrived to connect them,” Vänninen says.
During the early stages of the project, it was important to ensure that the system will also work when the hospital is completed. As the hospital was still in the construction phase, additional loads had to be ordered from kW-set.
“Already in the first phase of the project, we wanted to simulate what would happen if a power outage struck the hospital while it is running. kW-set provided us with additional loads to ensure that the system works in a real-life situation,” he continues.

Hard work pays off
During his career, Vänninen has worked with many different companies. He feels that working with kW-set was not only easy and smooth but also enjoyable.
“Everything went really well. In this project, it was certainly true that hard work pays off. This was a long and wonderful project, which has now been successfully completed,” Vänninen says in summary.
