Scandic Helsinki Hub
Electricity at Scandic Helsinki Hub is secured by a modern backup power unit
The over 100-year-old high-value building in Kamppi in Helsinki was renovated into an office hotel, and at the same time, we replaced the outdated backup power unit with a modern one.
In the 1920s, Tilgmann Oy’s printing house operated at Annankatu 18 in Kamppi, and since then, the building by the side of the Old Church Park has been home to the headquarters of Mutual Pension Insurance Company Varma (1980–2008) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). In spring 2022, Varma renovated the building for a new tenant: Scandic conference hotel. At the same time, the old backup power unit was replaced with a modern one. The electrical contractor was Boctok Oy.
The previous backup power unit was already more than 20 years old, and the diesel generator’s power did not meet the requirements set for a modern office hotel. Maintenance was no longer financially viable either, and there were challenges in the availability of spare parts.
At Scandic Helsinki Hub, a decision was made to acquire a modern backup power unit from kW-set, which is both reliable and efficient. The new backup power unit secures more electrical systems than before, ensuring smooth operations throughout the 22,000-square-metre hotel. The building houses 352 hotel rooms, 18 conference rooms and coworking spaces, and a large restaurant area.
The total contract included a demanding forwarding project
The total contract consisted of all services required to ensure the smooth operation of the new backup power unit. We dismantled the old backup power unit which was recycled for reuse in another location. We designed a new backup power unit suitable for the hotel’s backup power room and delivered it to the location on a fast schedule directly from our own warehouse.
The delivery included the demanding forwarding of the backup power unit in the heart of Helsinki, as well as installation, ventilation and electrical work, including earthing. We connected the backup power unit to the existing exhaust air vent and installed a new and more environmentally friendly fuel tank. Soundproofing and heat insulation were also added to the exhaust system. Finally, the backup power unit underwent commissioning tests, and we will take care of the scheduled maintenance of the unit during the warranty period.
The new backup power unit now takes care of the office hotel’s power supply automatically during unexpected power outages. In this way, the settings for people visiting the city and hotel guests remain excellent in all situations.
